Sisters of Social Service - Development Assistant

The Development Assistant works collaboratively with the Development Director in a progressive, upbeat Catholic organization to raise funds to expand and sustain programming. Responsibilities include communicating with and acknowledging supporters, assisting with materials and appeals to further fundraising and outreach efforts, and writing, proofreading and editing for a variety of newsletters, on-line content and other media.


We are looking for a bright, energetic person who wants to have meaningful work with diverse people who help those on the margins of our world.  You should be a motivated and thoughtful team player, have 3-5 years of Development and/or non-profit experience, and be interested in learning more about both the world of Development and the world of the Sisters of Social Service.

Key job responsibilities

  • Assists with the fundraising/development efforts in a multi-faceted non-profit that works for social justice, economic development and provides social service work
  • Manages multiple databases and provides administrative support for development efforts --- performs duties involving gift and database management, preparation of support materials and general administrative activities (donor tracking, thanks yous, basic reports, data analysis and proof- reading) 
  • Works within the department on independent and collaborative projects related to fundraising, stewardship, outreach and general support for the organization
  • Assists with writing, editing and creating materials that help to communicate the SSS mission, ministries and diverse community in a variety of formats including electronic photo albums, displays, website content, e-news and printed newsletters...
  • Supports ongoing work with excellent donor relations and customer service skills

Required job qualifications/experience

1.      Bachelor’s degree or higher

2.      We are looking for a candidate who has 3-5 years of Development experience.  We will consider candidates with non-profit experience, but this should be 3-5 years of experience at a non-profit, faith-based or community organization setting serving in an administrative capacity with solid writing, customer service and database experience.

3.      Excellent database management skills – attention to details, experience with Donor Perfect or other fundraising databases preferred

4.      Intermediate writing skills (creating new content as well as proofreading and editing skills).  All candidates must have experience and proficiency with formal writing, and publication experience is highly desired.

5.      Strong technology skills - Excel, Word, mailmerge, spreadsheets, e-mailing, research skills and the ability to learn new programs (prior experience with photo editing and design programs and/or Publisher helpful)

6.      Donor recognition and formal writing experience - thank you letters, basic foundation letters, special event invitations, newsletters, web content
