Prospect Research Coordinator

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Performs functions critical to the success of the Development Division’s prospect identification efforts, including data analysis, preparing analytical and incisive research profiles, managing GLAZA’s online research platform subscriptions, and coordinating data scans through those platforms as needed/negotiated in annual contracts.
  2. Creates annual research budget and strategic plan for research operations, including a long-term strategy for continued analysis of database through companies specializing in database prospect analysis and wealth ratings.
  3.  Assists the Senior Director of Development with Development’s moves management and documentation, including prospect strategy meetings, prospect ratings, and solicitor assignments adhering  to profile volume metrics as established by the Senior Director of Development.
  4.  Monitors the accurate documentation of solicitor/donor interaction in Raiser’s Edge (RE) database to ensure and protect institutional memory. Coordinates both input and output of pertinent prospect data in the system. Produces a variety of prospect management reports when needed.
  5.  Assists the VP of Institutional Advancement with the administrative functions related to the Board of Trustees Nominating Committee including, but not limited to, preparing reports on prospective nominees and preparing the annual Trustee review.
  6.  Reviews and edits own and others’ work using contemporary business grammar, punctuation, and spelling rules to ensure accuracy, consistency, and clarity.
  7.  Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required

  1. Must have a Bachelor's degree and at least four years of hands-on fundraising research experience are minimum requirements.
  2. Must be skilled in using the Raiser’s Edge database, PC friendly, MS Word, MS Excel, and experience with research databases.
  3.  Must have working knowledge of the principles and practices of development and fundraising. 
  4.  Must be an organized, flexible self-starter with demonstrated ability to initiate programmatic activities independently, and proactively seek solutions; must be able to prioritize and complete work in a timely manner despite many deadlines and competing requirements.
  5.  Must possess integrity and high standards of professional conduct, including demonstrated ability to maintain confidential materials.
  6.  Must possess the ability/willingness to learn how to analyze business financial statements and various personal financial sources as it pertains to wealth identification and capacity assignment (i.e. property records, SEC filings, D&B reports, etc.) and ability to condense large amounts of information by extracting only relevant material for organization’s purpose.
  7.  Must demonstrate ability to compose letters, memos, briefings, reports and proposals that are grammatically correct and properly formatted.
  8.  Must demonstrate ability to communicate persuasively - orally and in writing - to a variety of constituents, and to listen perceptively, conveying sensitivity and awareness, to prospective donors.
  9.  Must demonstrate the ability to work well with people, applying good judgment and diligently building relationships when appropriate with donors and donor prospects, Board members, the general public and Zoo and GLAZA staff, including colleagues, senior staff, curators, keepers, vendors, consultants, members, and volunteers.
  10.  Must demonstrate skills in prospect management.
  11.  Demonstrated ability to focus on a computer screen for extended periods during the day.
  12.  Demonstrated ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods during the day.
  13. Demonstrated ability to visually see or hear calls being received.
  14.  Willingness to work evenings, holidays and weekends as required.
  15.  Must have a familiarity with the goals of the LA Zoo as well as a practical understanding of zoos and conservation organizations.
  16.  Must work all GLAZA galas, including the annual gala, the Beastly Ball.
