Executive Director, Side Street Projects
ABOUT THE POSITION
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for the organization's consistent achievement of its mission, strategic framework, fund development and financial objectives as described in the following areas.
A. Organizational Leadership and Administration. The Executive Director will:
- Direct and deliver the organization’s long-range strategy to achieve its mission, and demonstrate measurable impact and timely progress.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing program, organizational and annual financial plans with the Board of Directors and staff, and carry out plans and policies authorized by the Board.
- Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations including but not limited to insurance policies, legal contracts and land leases.
- Maintain a working knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and local regulations and significant developments and trends in the arts education and civic fields.
- See that the Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing its stability.
- Work with the Board to maintain and cultivate relationships with funders and/or individual donors and ensure regular Board contribution commitments are fulfilled in line with organizational policy.
- Meet with the Board on a regular basis through scheduled monthly or quarterly meetings and Finance, Board Development and Fundraising Committee work.
B. External Relations. The Executive Director will:
- Leverage arts organizing power of the organization to contribute and/or lead movements toward equitable outcomes for the community.
- Leverage art-making and creativity as an organizing force to build community, and collectively imagine and realize equitable social change.
- Oversee the establishment of sound working relationships and cooperative arrangements with community groups, organizations and civic and educational institutions.
- See that the activities of the organization, its programs and goals are publicized and visible to the public and other organizational stakeholders and funders through a range of communications platforms.
- Represent the programs, mission, vision and values of the organization to public agencies, organizations, and the general public.
- Jointly, with the president and secretary of the board of directors, conduct official correspondence of the organization, and jointly, with designated officers, execute legal documents.
C. Personnel and Organizational Culture. The Executive Director will:
- Be responsible for the supervision, recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, both paid staff and volunteers.
- Develop, manage and deliver clear workplans for all direct reports and meet regularly with staff to provide support and feedback.
- Ensure that job descriptions are developed, that regular annual performance evaluations are held, and that best human resource practices are in place. See that an effective management team, with appropriate provision for succession, is in place.
- Support staff and volunteer development and education, and assist program staff in relating their specialized work to the total program of the organization.
- Maintain a work culture and environment that attracts, retains, and motivates a diverse staff of top quality people.
D.Fund Development and Financial Management. The Executive Director will:
- Lead and oversee fundraising efforts including the development and implementation of a multi-year diversified funding plan, grant management, grant writing, individual donation campaigns and event production.
- Ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the organization to carry out its work, including maintaining a reserve.
- Participate in educational opportunities such as seminars, workshops, and retreats with the goal of keeping current on non-profit financial trends and best practices.
- Work with the staff, Finance Committee (when applicable), and the Board in preparing annual budgets; and manage cash flow while ensuring that the organization operates within budget guidelines.
- Oversee and advise when needed regarding payroll, act as signatory on operating checking account, and approve purchases.
- Oversee the maintenance of donated artist prints and the sales of such art along with promotion/oversight of annual membership strategy and implementation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Minimum of five years working in arts administration and/or with artists for a non-profit organization.
Leadership: Must be a self-starter with a creative entrepreneurial spirit who prizes horizontal and community-informed decision-making.
Internal management: Must be a strong manager with supervisorial experience willing to provide mentorship and roll up their sleeves and understand all aspects of the organization to support the mission and team.
Passion for the arts and social justice: Hold a strong belief in the transformative power of the arts to fuel social change and invest in trauma-informed care.
Commitment Dedicated to supporting the vitality of Altadena and Northwest Pasadena and committed to growing and maintaining reciprocal, trusting organizational, civic and community partnerships.
Education: An undergraduate degree is required. Practicing artist is a plus.
Skills: Experience with community organizing, consensus building, understanding of environmental sustainability practices
Financial Management: Experience overseeing organizational or project budgets of $50,000 and above
Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.
The salary range starts at $85,000 and is commensurate with experience. Benefits include 10 days paid vacation each year for the first two years, 15 days per year for Years 3 - 5, and 20 days per year starting in Year 6, 14 holidays, and 7 sick days per year; and hybrid work flexibility.
