SPIRITT is looking for an experienced and mission-driven Accounting Manager to play a key role in strengthening the financial health and operational success of our organization.

This is more than a traditional accounting position. The Accounting Manager will serve as a strategic financial partner to leadership and program teams, helping ensure that resources are properly allocated, government contracts and grants are managed effectively, and financial information is accurate, timely, and meaningful.

The ideal candidate is someone who understands the unique requirements of nonprofit and government-funded organizations, and can confidently navigate multiple funding sources, cost allocations, grant accounting, restricted funds, reimbursement-based contracts, audits, and compliance requirements.

You will work closely with the CEO, COO, Board of Directors, and program leadership to help leaders understand where resources are being used, and make informed decisions that support SPIRITT’s programs and long-term sustainability.

Duties

  • Manage and monitor financial activity across multiple government contracts, grants, programs, and funding sources.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor cost allocation methodologies to ensure expenses are appropriately and consistently allocated among programs and funding sources.
  • Review program expenditures for compliance with applicable contract, grant, and funding requirements.
  • Oversee cost-reimbursement invoicing, revenue recognition, accounts receivable, and supporting documentation.
  • Partner with program leadership to monitor budgets, expenditures, and contract performance.
  • Support grant and contract budgeting, modifications, financial reporting, and closeout activities.
  • Prepare budget modifications and budget-to-actual reports.
  • Work with managers to identify variances, understand their causes, and develop appropriate corrective strategies.
  • Stay current on applicable government, grant, and funding requirements and communicate financial implications to leadership and program staff.
  • Oversee the organization’s accounting, finance, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and cash flow management functions.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, and analysis for the CEO, and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee preparation and analysis of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate agency and program audits and serve as a key point of contact for auditors and external financial partners.
  • Maintain strong internal controls and financial processes to protect organizational resources.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, reduce risk, and strengthen financial accountability.
  • Supervise, coach, and support finance and administrative staff.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and service.
  • Participate in organizational planning and initiatives that strengthen SPIRITT’s financial and administrative infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Management, or a related field.
  • At least five years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, preferably within a nonprofit or government-funded environment.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and audits.
  • Demonstrated experience working with multiple funding sources, grants, government contracts, and/or cost-reimbursement programs.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leadership, program staff, Board members, auditors, funders, and external partners.

Preferred

  • Experience managing nonprofit finance and administration for an organization with a budget of approximately $3 million–$12 million.
  • Strong experience with cost allocation methodologies and indirect/direct cost principles.
  • Experience with government-funded programs and grant accounting.
  • Experience with budget development, contract financial reporting, and reimbursement invoicing.
  • CPA, MBA, MA, or other advanced degree.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who is equally comfortable digging into a general ledger, analyzing a cost allocation, reviewing a government contract, or sitting with a program director to explain what the numbers mean.

We value the well-being of our employees and are proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • 15 Paid Holidays annually (With extra Personal and Wellness Holiday)
  • 14 Vacation Days, with increases based on years of service
  • 1 hour for every 30 hours worked sick time (with 120 hours max)
  • 403(b) Retirement Savings Plan available on day one, with employer matching
  • 100% Employer-Paid Medical Benefits for staff
  • Employee wellness programs, including mental health support and work-life balance initiatives

Join a team that prioritizes your growth, health, and passion for community service. Lead the numbers. Strengthen the systems. Support the mission.
